The Type II HVAC servo found in 1970's Mercedes was not good. It leaked, failed, got replaced for a non-trivial amount of money then failed again. It just plain sucked. George Murphey sells or sold (?) replacements that were better but the hot tip is the digital replacement these guys sell:
