126 Seat Repair

126 Seat Repair

"The drivers seat will not go forward or backwards....you can hear the hum of the motor .." ??

Had same problem with my 82 300SD. There is a cable (like a speedo cable) that connects the motor with the gears. You have to remove the seat from the car to get to it. The problem is caused by the end fittings slipping slightly away from the cable jacket which allows the center cable to slip out of its socket. You can probably fix it by removing the cable from the seat, pushing the end fittings back onto the hollow cable jacket a little, and staking it in place. Then reinstall the whole business.

Removing the seat is a real pain, so you probably want to do the same thing to all three cables while it's out. After several similar problems (one motor at a time) I did all of mine about 10 years ago with no problems since.
